Shameless Magazine, March 2022
Illustration, Cover Design
Shameless is an independent Canadian voice for people with marginalized genders. It’s a fresh alternative to typical teen magazines, packed with articles about arts, culture and current events, reflecting the neglected diversity of our readers’ interests and experiences. Using a combination of traditional hand tools and digital software like Photoshop, I created an illustrated cover that focuses on the theme of food insecurity.
Food insecurity is a significant issue affecting many individuals and families in Toronto, as well as in other parts of Canada. According to a report by the Toronto Foundation, approximately one in eight households in the city experience food insecurity. This means that they lack access to sufficient and nutritious food to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Food insecurity can have negative impacts on physical and mental health, as well as academic and employment outcomes. It is a complex issue that requires multi-faceted solutions, including addressing poverty, improving access to healthy food, and strengthening social safety nets. Organizations in Toronto, such as food banks, community food programs, and advocacy groups, are working to address food insecurity and its underlying causes, but more work needs to be done to ensure that everyone in the city has access to healthy and affordable food.
